The Piano della Conoscenza (Knowledge Plan) emerged as a central component of the Great Pompeii Project, an ambitious restoration and conservation programme initiated by the Italian government. Its goal was to deepen scientific understanding of Pompeii’s archaeological fabric through systematic investigation, diagnosis of structural and decay issues, and advanced documentation. Cutting-edge digital methods — including laser scanning, photogrammetry, and geo‐referenced mapping — were employed to assess the condition of buildings across the site, especially the numerous “insulae” (blocks of housing). The plan also sought to consolidate disparate archival sources and integrate them into a unified information system, thereby creating a foundation for informed, preventive conservation and sustainable management of the heritage site.
