Archaeological park of Sepino – Sepino (CB) – Italy

Magnetometer

As part of the “Forma Saepini” project, the Archaeological Park of Sepino underwent an extensive remote sensing campaign aimed at achieving a detailed characterization of the site’s archaeological subsurface. The investigations involved the integrated use of magnetometric surveying and ground-penetrating radar (GPR), two complementary methodologies that, when combined, provide a much more complete and reliable understanding of the buried structures and the urban stratigraphy of the area.

A total of approximately 13 hectares was surveyed using magnetometry, and around 10 hectares with GPR with antenna of 200mhz and 600mhz, ensuring the coverage of a large section of the archaeological park. The geophysical surveys conducted at Sepino yielded extremely significant results: magnetometry enabled the detection of anomalies associated with anthropogenic structures and materials of archaeological interest, while GPR provided important information regarding the stratigraphic organization and depth of buried features. However, it is only by integrating these methodologies with existing archaeological information that the interpretive effectiveness of the data can be maximized, yielding a comprehensive and nuanced picture of Sepino’s urban stratigraphy.
